On the thermodynamics of universal horizons in Einstein-Æther theory

چکیده
The theories of gravity which violate local Lorentz invariance do not admit a universal maximum speed of signal-propagation. Different field excitations see a different effective metric and hence a different light cone. In these theories, although one can define the Killing horizon in a conventional way, this definition does not capture the notion of a black hole. This is so because there exist modes which see a wider light cone than the one defined by the Killing Horizon and therefore can escape to infinity. However, there exist solutions of these theories which admit a special spacelike hypersurface which acts as a one-way membrane. Signals from beyond this hypersurface can never escape to infinity and are destined to hit the singularity. In this sense this hypersurface acts like a black-hole horizon and is called the Universal Horizon because it traps modes travelling with arbitrarily high velocities. We use the Noether charge method à la Wald to show that a first law, which resembles the first law of thermodynamics, can be formulated for universal horizons in the Einstein-Æther theory. This seems to suggest that in Lorentz violating theories one should ascribe the thermodynamical properties to the universal horizon and not to the Killing horizon. ∗ [email protected] 1 ar X iv :1 30 9. 09 07 v1 [ gr -q c] 4 S ep 2 01 3

Einstein - Æther Gravity : Theory and Observational Constraints
Einstein-aether theory is general relativity coupled to a dynamical unit timelike vector field. A brief review of current theoretical understanding and observational constraints on the four coupling parameters of the theory is given.
متن کاملBlack Hole Horizons and the Thermodynamics of Strings *
We review the classical thermodynamics and the greybody factors of general (rotating) non-extreme black holes and discuss universal features of their near-horizon geometry. We motivate a microscopic interpretation of general black holes that relates the thermodynamics of an effective string theory to the geometry of the black hole in the vicinity of both the outer and the inner event horizons. ...

متن کاملThe Static Universe of Walther Nernst
Walther Nernst (1864-1941) was, without a doubt, one of the most remarkable physicists of the early 20th century. His main accomplishments were in the field of physical chemistry, a discipline he founded together with other well-known scientists, including J.H. van’t Hoff, W. Ostwald and S. Arrhenius. His most famous contribution to physics was the so-called third law of thermodynamics, for whi...
متن کاملThe Cosmological Views of Nernst: an Appraisal
Walther Nernst is best known for his contributions to thermodynamics, and in particular for the third law of thermodynamics, for which he received the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1920. His work at the time when quantum theory was developing rapidly had cosmological implications which he explored in 1937 in a paper which has been overlooked. The cosmological work of Nernst has been brought to m...
